TALES FROM THE TURNBUCKLE - JEFF JARRETT'S OBSESSION

Obsession [uhb-sesh-uhn]-noun- the domination of one’s thoughts or feelings by a persistent idea, image, desire, etc.

The NWA World Heavyweight Title; one of the most prestigious championships in all of professional wrestling, is just that for one man in TNA, an obsession. Yet, I don’t believe this man even realizes what he could be getting himself into.

The King of the Mountain, Jeff Jarrett, has been consumed with being the NWA Title holder since Total Nonstop Action Wrestling’s inception. Jarrett has been the champion five times before, regaining the title back in the King of the Mountain match in June at the Slammiversary Pay-Per-View, and has been able to hold on to the gold ever since. Though, if he continues to stray his focus like he has been, he may be the FORMER world champion sooner than he may think.

Jarrett is so absorbed in the NWA title that he will do anything and everything to keep it around his waist. He will use anyone and everyone. There’s always either a guitar or someone to assist Jarrett in gaining or retaining the NWA title.

Take the match with Samoa Joe at the No Surrender PPV for example. Jeff wasn’t worried about losing the championship, because of it being a non-title match. But, I think the champ forgot who he was looking at on the other side of the six-sided ring. Joe not only gave Jarrett the “Muscle Buster” and got the pin, but he also took the NWA World Title with him.

This past week on iMPACT!, we saw that the King of the Mountain was livid. He was scheduled to take on the Lance Hoyt to open up the show, but before the big man from Texas could even get to the ring, he was attacked. Jarrett hit Hoyt from behind as he went down the ramp. The champion was out of control as he threw Hoyt into the guardrails, smashing him through a wall in the pit, and even started whipping him with a leather strap. Jarrett didn’t want to face Lance Hoyt that night; he wanted to send a message to the “Samoan Submission Machine”.

Jarrett then told Cornette that he wanted his belt back or Joe was going to be left in a pool of his own blood. In all this confusion, though, Jeff’s forgetting about one important detail: He has a title defense coming up!

Jeff Jarrett will face the man they call Sting on October 22nd at TNA’s biggest PPV ever, Bound for Glory. Now, not only is this match being promoted as Jeff‘s Title vs. Sting’s career, but your Olympic Hero and mine, Kurt Angle, will be ring side serving as the special enforcer.

Sting hasn’t been seen on TNA television since he signed the contract for his possible last match at Bound for Glory. Who knows what he’s been doing to get himself trained and prepared for this match. Then there’s Kurt Angle. He’s the wildcard. Only Kurt knows what his true intentions will be during this match.

So, if Jeff Jarrett wants to walk away from Bound For Glory the NWA World Champion, in my opinion he has to stop worrying about not having the gold in his hands for the time being. Sure, it’s driving Jarrett mad that Joe has the gold and won’t give it back, but in the big picture, Jarrett needs to focus on beating Sting. Jarrett needs to focus on the task at hand, but he’s letting his obsession with the NWA title and Samoa Joe blind him.

It’s an obsession that might ultimately cost Jarrett the title – for good – in the end.
