It looks like Bellator MMA and their 155-pound champion Will Brooks have officially parted ways.

Brooks (17-1) amassed a 9-1 record in ten fights under the Bellator MMA banner, including winning the Bellator Lightweight Championship, a title he still held up until today, when he was given a full release from the promotion.

Bellator MMA President Scott Coker spoke about the company’s decision not to renew the contract of Will Brooks with MMAJunkie on Saturday afternoon.

“It was very simple,” said Coker. “Will Brooks’ contract is ending, and we made a decision not to renew it. We’re going to give him a full release, so we’re not going to be in the Will Brooks business any longer.”

Brooks, who fights out of the American Top Team camp out of Florida, last competed for Bellator on November 6, 2015, where he defeated Marcin Held via five-round unanimous decision, compiling his eighth straight victory in the process.

Why the fuck would you not renew the contract of your champion?
