While not a lot of details are available at this point, it looks like we may have seen the last of Frank Mir inside the Octagon.

Mir, a former two-time UFC Heavyweight Champion, announced during his appearance on Ariel Helwani’s “The MMA Hour” program at MMAFighting.com on Tuesday afternoon that he has requested his release from the UFC.

Mir, who famously headlined the last UFC landmark event, UFC 100, where he fought Brock Lesnar, last fought at UFC Fight Night 85 on March 19, where he was knocked out by Lesnar’s upcoming opponent at Saturday’s landmark UFC 200 event, Mark Hunt.

After the fight, Mir was flagged for a potential USADA Anti-Doping Policy violation. He later went on the record stating that if he was handed down a lengthy suspension as a result of the USADA policy, Mir, at age 36, would retire from the sport. Whether or not that has anything to do with him requesting his release from the UFC remains to be seen.
