Arguably the biggest annual tournament in pro wrestling is set to begin on July 17th. New Japan’s G1 Climax is a round robin tournament held over the course of a month. The tournament has been in existence since 1974 in various forms and this is the 27th iteration.
Previous winners of the tournament include Antonio Inoki, Andre The Giant, Hulk Hogan, Shinsuke Nakamura, Hiroshi Tanahashi, Kazuchika Okada and last year’s winner Kenny Omega.
The winner of the tournament is granted a briefcase, this briefcase contains a contract for an IWGP World Heavyweight Title Match at the January Tokyo Dome/Wrestle Kingdom event next year.
New Japan has announced that the first day of the tournament will be available to watch for FREE on NJPWworld.com. This opening event includes Tanahashi vs Zack Sabre Jr and Kota Ibushi vs Tetsuya Naito.
