It was a rough last outing for two-time UFC welterweight title challenger Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson last March. Thompson was knocked out in devastating fashion by ex-lightweight champion Anthony “Showtime” Pettis during their 170-pound bout in Nashville.

Now, Thompson will take some much-needed time off following the knockout. Speaking to Eurobash recently, “Wonderboy” revealed that he’s hoping for a late 2019 return to the Octagon. Perhaps he can even land a spot on the UFC’s Madison Square Garden card:

“There’s not really a date, but hopefully this year we’ll be stepping back out there. Maybe September or October. I would love to fight at Madison Square Garden again if that happens. There are a lot of opportunities, the year is not over yet, so hopefully you’ll see me back in there this year,” Thompson said.

Thompson has now lost two-straight to both Darren Till and Pettis. His last victory came against Jorge Masvidal in November of 2017. Prior to that victory, Thompson failed to capture the UFC welterweight championship from Tyron Woodley on two occasions.

At 36-years-old, Thompson still feels like he has plenty left in the tank for one more run at a welterweight title, in one of the most talent-stacked divisions in the promotion.
