The iconic duo of Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler is considered to be one of best commentary teams in the history of wrestling and Ross recently revealed how his broadcast partner ended up on the commentary desk.

Jim Ross talked about a number of things during the latest episode of his Grilling JR podcast and he also talked about Jerry Lawler’s early days in the company.

JR first claimed that there was no talk of Lawler joining the commentary during the season of WrestleMania IX when he originally joined the promotion and he had only been brought in as an in-ring talent.

Revealing why he was put on the commentary team, the AEW star revealed that the only reason Jerry was given the role was Randy Savage’s sudden departure from the company:

“The only reason that Jerry got on Raw was because Savage walked. When they realized that Savage was not going to be at the taping that night, on site, it was suggested that Lawler do it. You know, it might have been Bruce [Prichard] that suggested it, I don’t know who did it.”

Jerry Lawler joined WWE back in 1993 and he made his debut for the promotion during the Royal Rumble event. On the other hand, Savage who had been fulfilling the color commentator duties since 1991, left the company in November 1994 to join WCW.
