Charlotte Flair’s first title defense as the NXT Women’s Champion is in the books.

Flair successfully retained the title in a hard-fought yet entertaining bout against Io Shirai during Wednesday’s episode of NXT on the USA Network in Winter Park, Florida at Full Sail University.

Flair lost the match but kept her title due to the DQ finish that saw Flair hit Io with a kendo stick. Post-match, Rhea Ripley made her return to TV by making the save.

WWE set up this contest on the April 8th episode of NXT when the company held a match that would determine who would be next line for a title shot.

A Ladder Match that saw Chelsea Green, Mia Yim, Tegan Nox, Io Shirai, Candice LeRae, and Dakota Kai took place with the winner becoming the next challenger to the title.

Shirai was victorious, earning the right to challenge Flair for the NXT Women’s Title.

Flair beat Ripley to win the NXT Women’s Title at WrestleMania 36 – Night 2 in Orlando, Florida at the WWE Performance Center last month. Up to this point on NXt TV, Ripley hadn’t been seen since Mania.
