Last Friday's SmackDown saw WWE continue on the road to WrestleMania 39, but one of the blue brand's biggest stars nearly had to miss the event.

The March 10, 2023, edition of SmackDown saw Cody Rhodes and Sami Zayn join forces against the Bloodline, and Rey Mysterio be announced for the Hall of Fame.

According to Mike Johnson of PWInsider.com, the show nearly had to go ahead without Drew McIntyre, who was said to be "extremely ill."

The two-time former WWE Champion was not cleared to wrestle until after he arrived at the arena and was examined by the medical team.

Johnson added that McMahon "received a lot of respect" for how hard he has worked for the company despite being under the weather.

Last November, it was reported that the Scottish Warrior had been extremely sick just days before Crown Jewel 2022.

Despite his illness, McIntyre made it to Saudi Arabia, where he defeated Karrion Kross in a steel cage match.

In PW Insider's report, it was stressed that McIntyre is "very much a locker room leader" with his commitment to working when booked.

During SmackDown, McIntyre was one of five men who competed for a chance at Intercontinental Champion GUNTHER at WrestleMania 39.

That match, which also included Sheamus, Karrion Kross, LA Knight, and Xavier Woods, ended with Sheamus and McIntyre both getting a pinfall.

GUNTHER demanded answers from Adam Pearce, who said that McIntyre and Sheamus will face off to determine the Austrian's opponent for April.

It has been reported that WWE's plan is for a triple-threat match for the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania 39.
