The WWE Universe will likely be kept waiting before they see the crowning of a new King and Queen of the Ring after the event's name was changed.

Last month, WWE announced the return of the King of the Ring as an event, the first such event since 2002.

In addition to a King, the event would see the crowning of a Queen of the Ring after Zelina Vega won the Queen's Crown Tournament in 2021.

On April 13, WWE announced that the show's name has been changed to WWE Night of Champions, leading to speculation over the future of the tournaments.

PW Insider Elite reports that the tournaments are "less likely" to happen given recent changes to creative.

It is worth stressing that no plans for the tournaments to happen or not happen have been set in stone yet.

It has been speculated that the name change has been made due to Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns.

WWE Night of Champions will take place on May 27, which (barring a shocking title change of injury) will be day 1,000 of Reigns' tenure as champion.

Reigns is expected to compete at the event after skipping the upcoming WWE Backlash Premium Live Event in Puerto Rico.

There is also speculation that Sami Zayn could appear at his first Saudi show, given that he is part of the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Champions.

Zayn has been kept from Saudi events due to his Syrian heritage, and Kevin Owens has refused to work the events in solidarity.
