The Sep. 20 episode of AEW Dynamite annual event Grand Slam averaged 984,000 viewers and did a 0.36 rating (P18-49).

AEW Dynamite Grand Slam was very successful, as Wrestlenomics reports the episode had the highest total viewership since the Feb. 22 episode of AEW Dynamite(1.028 million viewers). The episode was also the highest P18-49 rating since the Sep. 14, 2022 episode of AEW Dynamite.

While this year's special episode was successful, it is down from last year's AEW Grand Slam event, which had 1.039 million viewers, as reported by Wrestlenomics. Last year's event had a stacked card, which included Jon Moxley and Bryan Danielson competing in the main event for the AEW World Championship. Although this year's AEW Dynamite Grand Slam didn't do as well as the previous year, it's still a great accomplishment for the company.

The Sep. 20 episode had four title matches on the card. In the main event, AEW World Champion MJF defended his title against Samoa Joe. The challenger earned his opportunity by winning the number-one contender tournament that occurred for a week on TV. They also have a history dating back to when Joe shoved MJF when the champion appeared as a "Security Guard" at NXT Takeover Brooklyn 2 on Aug. 20, 2016.

After seven years, MJF finally got his revenge and defeated Joe to retain his title. Joe tried to work over the champion's neck throughout the match, including landing a PileDriver on MJF on the floor outside of the ring. MJF got the win with help from Adam Cole and used his wrist tape to choke out Joe for the submission victory.

While MJF cheated to win the match, Joe showed him respect and shook hands after his loss. AEW could continue the feud, but it seems like MJF and Joe's rival has ended on the Sep. 20 episode.

AEW's next big event will be their upcoming pay-per-view WrestleDream on Oct. 1. Wrestling Observer's Dave Meltzer reported that the plan is to have MJF and Cole defend the ROH Tag Team Championships against The Righteous at the PPV. However, Cole hurt his ankle on the Sep. 20 episode when he jumped off the stage ramp to get to ringside for the MJF and Joe match. It's unclear how severe the injury is, so the tag title match could change.

The company has a few days before the PPV, giving them enough time to determine what to do with MJF. If Cole can't compete, the AEW World Champion may either be off the card or possibly defend his title at the event.
