Former WWE Superstar Matt Riddle was given a few too many chances according to some in the wrestling promotion.

Riddle was released from WWE this week, joining a list of names cut from the company that includes Dolph Ziggler, Mustafa Ali, Dana Brooke, and more. These releases, which had been expected following the merger of WWE & UFC and the launch of TKO Group Holdings, come mere days after over 100 employees lost their jobs at WWE's offices in Stamford.

As a former U.S. and Tag Team Champion who once challenged Roman Reigns, Riddle is one of the biggest names to be cut this week, perhaps only second to Dolph Ziggler. Riddle's release comes weeks after his final match with WWE on the September 4, 2023, episode of Raw, where he and Drew McIntyre lost to the Viking Raiders.

Fightful Select reports that Riddle had not been factored into any immediate plans, and was said to be in "good spirits" before his release. One WWE higher-up stated that Riddle had "burned through too many chances" during his time in WWE. Riddle was doing some grappling training as usual this week.

Riddle often made headlines for WWE and not in a good way but WWE held off on parting ways with him up until this week. In August 2019, Riddle would have a backstage altercation with Bill Goldberg and would repeatedly 'bury' the WWE Hall of Famer in interviews. In June of 2020, Riddle was accused by wrestler Candy Cartwright of sexual assault and though Riddle admitted to an extramarital affair, claimed it was consensual. The case was dropped in 2021 but would also result in Riddle's marriage ending.

Last year, Riddle attended rehab after what was reported to be multiple wellness violations. Earlier this month, Riddle claimed he had been sexually assaulted at an airport, but it was later reported that he had been intoxicated and caused an incident at JFK International.
