Fans would have loved to witness Cody Rhodes go up against pro wrestling legend Sting, in what could have been an exciting clash. Unfortunately, it's unlikely that they will ever get the chance again to share the ring.

WWE star Cody Rhodes, one of the co-founders of AEW recently revealed that he was given the opportunity to face Sting for the former's last bout in the promotion.

'The American Nightmare' is no longer a part of AEW. He made a surprising return to WWE at WrestleMania 38 after leaving AEW in February last year. Rhodes had been a top star in Tony Khan's promotion and he recently spoke about the final match that he was offered in AEW.

Speaking in an interview with SI Wrestling, Rhodes said that WWE Hall of Famer Sting was offered to him as his opponent in his final match.

“The last match I was offered in AEW was that match. It wasn’t confirmed, or anything like that, but just the little I had to do with his debut there is a wonderful memory."

Cody added that he was a "little Stinger" as a kid, and teased that he'll bust out a Stinger Splash at some point as a tribute to the legend.

"Seriously, cheers to a wonderful career,” said Cody.

Meanwhile, Sting joined AEW in 2020, where he helped Cody Rhodes and Darby Allin on his debut. 'The Icon' has since participated in a number of high-profile events. He has also helped to craft a number of noteworthy moments in the promotion.

After having a legendary career that spanned over four decades, Sting recently announced that his final match in AEW will be at Revolution 2024. Therefore, it is highly doubtful that Rhodes and 'The Icon' will ever face each other inside the squared circle.
