CM Punk's shocking return to WWE at this week's Survivor Series was overseen directly by WWE's Chief Content Officer Paul 'Triple H' Levesque.

The Best in the World returned in the closing moments of the show, in his first appearance at a WWE Premium Live Event since the 2014 Royal Rumble. Punk was fired from AEW in September 2023 following a week-long investigation into his backstage altercation with Jack Perry at AEW All In.

CM Punk had an hour-long conversation with Triple H last week, according to Fightful Select. Punk told at least one person about this conversation. WWE staff, representatives, and those in creative had no idea that Punk was going to return. While Punk walked through the backstage in plain sight minutes before his return, that part of the backstage area had been cleared out.

Triple H took over calling the show in the last few minutes of WWE Survivor Series. It was WWE's Head of Creative who called for the copyright logo to appear, giving a false finish to the show and making Punk's return a bigger surprise. Speaking at the post-show press conference, Triple H said he is thrilled with Punk's return and that WWE is where he belongs.

Many in production were not aware of what was going to happen. Talent involved in the main event were told "very shortly" before the Men's WarGames match that CM Punk would be coming out.

The deal between WWE and CM Punk is believed to be "several years in length" according to PW Insider. Their report reiterated that Punk and WWE had their first communications over the last week.
