Dead Man Blamed For Over 200 Speeding Tickets

A dead man has been blamed for over two hundred speeding offences in Australia in what police believe is a major scam to avoid traffic fines.

The police in Sydney say 240 people are under investigation over the speeding scam, where hundreds of motorists blamed either the same dead man, or a person living in another state, for driving their cars when the speeding offences occured.

So far the police investigation has found that most of the motorists named the same man from Sydney as the person who was driving their vehicle when it was speeding. A man who isn't even alive and died five years ago.

The police investigation comes after large publicity given to the recent case of a retired judge in Australia who tried to avoid a $59 speeding fine in a similar manner.

The case prompted police to do an audit of people who filed statutory declarations to avoid paying speeding fines.

The audit found a whopping 700,000 people had signed sworn statements in the past three years to say they should not be fined because they weren't driving their cars.
