Matt Bentley Interview: Talks about TNA in CT, "MySpace", & primetime

Former TNA X-Division Champion, Matt Bentley, was one of the special guests on this past week's live edition (11/13/06) of Monday Night Mayhem (w/The Big Mosh & Blade).

Here are some of the highlights from the interview provided by The Mayhem's show correspondent and host of Mark Out Radio, Dan Kriegbaum:

The Big Mosh & Blade welcomed Matt to the program for his third time in The Mayhem's almost five-year history. This past week has seen the TNA primetime Impact debut on Spike TV, so to get ready for this Sunday night's Genesis Pay-Per-View, Bentley returned to "Your Home Of Wrestling Radio."

With Matt being a relative of "The Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels, Blade found it fitting right off the bat to ask Matt what his thoughts are on the fact that Blade (who is 26 year-old straight male) carries around a HBK life-size cardboard cutout to whatever big wrestling event he goes to. Matt Bentley said that he finds that "a little scary & strange." Blade then went on to describe how great it is, and that he will never part ways with it. Insert your cheesy references here wrestling fans, but that's why Blade is Blade!

The Big Mosh then had his turn to ask the next question, and did so by asking Matt why TNA uses several Phil Collins references (Against All Odds, Genesis) as part of their regular rotation. Bentley said he didn't know about why TNA uses them, but he believes that Phil Collins is on the "comeback trail," with the TNA PPV references and recent remakes of "In The Air Tonight & "Land Of Confusion."

Mosh went on to ask what Matt had heard so far about last Saturday's cancelled TNA house show in Connecticut. Bentley said that he had no idea why the cancellation happened, and that he knows just as much as everyone else that has read the rumors. He added that the last he heard about it was that the company switched buildings, because of the good turnout they were expecting, which he thinks might have been a snag in not securing the building with enough time. Matt alluded to another rumor about being shut down by their State Athletic Commission, to which he added that he didn't know if a license was needed or not to run in Connecticut..."but who knows?"

As a follow up, Mosh asked for Bentley's thoughts on whether or not he believes that the WWE was involved in any way, shape, or form in the cancellation. Matt said that "he would not put it past them to do it." He then took the fans back down memory lane, to when the WWE was filming a commercial at Universal Studios right next to where TNA filmed Impact. Ms. Brooks, "The Monster" Abyss, "The Franchise" Shane Douglas, & others went down with cookies & balloons to welcome the WWE to their "home turf," which they did not seem to like too much. He then added that he would not think they would like TNA coming up & running shows right near the WWE HQ, so he would not be surprised if they were behind it. Bentley then said that it happens all the time, all the way down to your local independents trying to shut each other down "when one comes into the others backyard."

The Mayhem Crew plugged Matt's official website (www.OfficialMattBentley.com) & MySpace(www.MySpace.com/RealMattBentley), and then asked Matt if he legitimately knows all 4,100+ friends that are on his MySpace page. Matt threw a curveball with his answer, when he said that he indeed does know every single one of them, adding that he's met them all, they all go to his house for parties, & have a good time -- they're all personal close friends of his, and he can vouch for every single one of them. "So yes, I do know. I actually do have 4,000-some friends...believe it or not." He then later added, "I make more friends every 10 minutes than you can imagine." Matt then said that while they are on the topic of the internet, you can bid RIGHT NOW on event-worn Matt Bentley tights -- exclusively on E-Bay.

Mosh & Blade went on to mention the TNA Impact primetime special that was filmed last Monday, and asked Matt what it was like backstage -- knowing that they had reached another company milestone. Matt then went through the timeline of TNA going from weekly Pay-Per-View's, to the Fox Sports Net deal, to the internet, to Spike TV at 11PM ET, and to now be on primetime television -- which will hopefully eventually get to be a consistent two-hour long spot. For all of the results from Impact (including Kurt Angle's in-ring debut, the Voodoo Kin Mafia's shoot on Vince McMahon and DX, & more), check out www.TNAWrestling.com.

The Big Mosh then asked about Matt Bentley's new look & the rumors of him being part of a former NWA & ECW World Heavyweight Champion's new stable in the coming weeks & months. Matt said that it's basically the group (Kazarian, Johnny Devine, & himself) being fed up about taking everything they had been given, and doing it, without a reward -- so they're taking it into their own hands to get what they want...without letting anyone get in their way. Are the rumors true? I guess the new "movement" could be here sooner than we think...

Blade & Mosh mentioned the upcoming FXE training school & upcoming training camp that Bentley has put together. Matt described how it started along with A.J. Gallant, along with Brother Devon of Team 3-D, who recently joined up as a trainer as well. He said they have around 45 students currently, and that he loves being a part in it. Matt brought up an upcoming training camp with the Director Of Talent Relations in TNA, Terry Taylor, there to look over the talent. The camp is at the end of January.
