PS3 game cases. Why does Sony have to buck the system?

So I have my copies of Resistance: Fall of Man as well as Gundam: Crossfire. I don't know what Sony is playing at here, but why do they constantly try to reinvent the wheel? Everyone else is using standard-sized DVD cases for their games, but of course
