English cyclist Paul Manning has won the 4,000m individual pursuit gold medal in a time of 4:23.799 at the Melbourne Park velodrome.

The 21 year old beat fellow team mate Rob Hayles by almost five seconds with a time of 4:28.616. Manning had clocked the fastest time in qualifying earlier in the evening.

Steve Cummings completed England's clean sweep of the medals when he clocked 4:24.767 to win the bronze race-off against New Zealander Jason Allen.

During the qualifying heats, Manning set the fastest time stopping the clock at 4:21.801 which made him the one to chase.

Hayles, who was looking to add gold to his world titles in the team sprint and madison, looked to be in control with two laps to go but he faded badly and had to settle for silver.

When asked if his qualifying time was competitive with his personal best, Manning said: “It’s pretty close, my best is around the mid 4:20s. I will need to break a personal best to win the final,” indicating he was in top shape to set the winning time for gold.

It was England's night tonight but New Zealand is the team to watch. Naming its biggest ever Cycling team for a Commonwealth Games, New Zealand boasts a 33-strong squad of road, mountain bike and track cyclists and they are hungry for gold.
