Oprah Winfrey was the subject of a $1.5 million extortion plot according to FBI papers and various newspaper reports.
A criminal complaint filed in the US District Court against Keifer Bonvillian, 36, did not name Winfrey as the target.
However, several newspapers including the Chicago Tribune and Sun Times have named the TV presenter as the intended victim.
Bonvillian was arrested in Atlanta on December 15 after he threatened to release potentially damaging recorded phone conversations about the victim.
He was arrested as he met up to exchange the tapes for money and was later bailed for $20,000.
He will appear for a preliminary hearing in Chicago today but denies that anything happened that was illegal.
Winfrey has yet to make a statement about the alleged black mail case which is believed to involve over twelve hours of recorded conversations.
