No comment ... NRL boss David Gallop won't discuss the probe.
THE Australian Tax Office will subpoena NRL documents after launching a widespread investigation into the dealings of all rugby league player managers.
In a move that has the potential to unearth any player payment rorts, the investigation could have severe ramifications for all NRL players.

It is understood agents of rugby union, soccer and possibly AFL may also be investigated.

NRL player agents are yet to be officially informed of the inquiry.

It is understood the NRL has been asked to hand over all details on every player manager's dealings during the past five years.

The ATO wants names, contact numbers and home addresses of agents.

It will be one of the biggest investigations by the ATO into Australian sporting circles. Tax officers will be focusing on any undisclosed income player managers have received.

"It's full on," said one source. "They are throwing out a wide net to see what comes in."

The ATO is also scrutinising the dealings between player managers and the New Zealand Warriors salary cap scandal. New Zealand last month lost four competition points and was fined $430,000 for breaching the NRL's salary cap last year.

Agents Jim Banaghan and George Mimis allegedly broke NRL salary cap rules in deals involving New Zealand Warriors, including captain Steve Price and prop Ruben Wiki.

Mr Mimis said last week: "All of the commercial terms for Price's deal were noted by us to the club in a signed document by Price and the club, which includes his radio and motor vehicle and numerous other commercial terms.

"Our understanding was that these had all been disclosed to the NRL."

The ATO wants the NRL to release the entire Warriors file. NRL management has said it will comply, given the ATO's request has come as a legal document.

"Whether there's an investigation and what material is called for is not information we are able to discuss," said NRL chief executive David Gallop.

It is understood the ATO has also contacted the Australian Rugby Union, requesting similar information from their managers.

ARU chief executive Gary Flowers confirmed his organisation would supply the information being sought by the ATO.
