Movie star Omar Sharif has been placed on probation and an anger management course after pleading no contest to a charge of hitting a parking attendant.

The actor, 74, is alleged to have called Juan Anderson a "stupid Mexican" when he refused to accept a 20 euro note in Beverly Hills in June 2005.

He originally pleaded not guilty but changed his plea on the day his jury trial was set to begin.

Sharif was ordered to stay away from Mr Anderson and fined $1000 (£512).

He was also ordered to stay 100 yards away from witnesses and the restaurant where the incident took place.

A hearing to determine compensation payments will be held at Beverly Hills Superior Court on 18 April.

Broken nose

Outside court, Sharif's lawyer said the victim was seeking $17,000 (£8,713) for a broken nose.

"It's a trial about a nose," said Harland Braun.

The actor's no contest plea is the equivalent to pleading guilty under Californian law, but it cannot be used as an admission of guilt in a civil case.

But Mr Braun said his client, who is currently in Egypt, continues to deny assault.

"He's maintained that he didn't do it - but it's really difficult to come here to testify."

According to the legal action filed by Mr Anderson in October, Sharif and a female companion were leaving a restaurant in Beverly Hills in June 2005 when the actor became upset that his car was not waiting.

The action claims Sharif was intoxicated and belligerent. It alleges he punched and insulted Mr Anderson.

Police spokesman Lt Mitch McCann said the parking attendant declined medical treatment and had no visible injuries.

In 2003, Sharif was given a one-month suspended sentence by a French court for head-butting a police officer in a casino near Paris.

The Lawrence of Arabia star has become better known as a gambler and contract bridge player in the last 20 years.
