George Michael will be the first singer to perform at the new Wembley Stadium.

The 43-year-old star will play the opening concert on June 9 at the much-delayed 90 000 capacity super-venue as part of his European tour.

A source said: "George feels very honoured. It's the venue that everybody wants to play."

George played several memorable shows at the old Wembley Stadium, which was demolished in 2002.

He was part of the line-up for Live Aid in 1985, performed at Nelson Mandela's 70th birthday concert in 1998 and stole the show at the Freddie Mercury tribute concert in 1992.

It was also the venue for the final Wham! show, The Finale, which took place in 1986.
It was recently reported that George had asked former Wham! bandmate Andrew Ridgeley to take part in a reunion show at the new stadium.

Rumours are rife that Andrew will join George on stage on June 9.

Tickets for George's Wembley concert go on sale on Thursday.

Alex Horne, the managing director of Wembley Stadium, said: "I'm sure this will be a very hot ticket. We are looking forward to putting the stadium back on the world map as a major music destination."
