Pretoria - A final decision will be taken on Friday on whether South African captain, Graeme Smith, will be able to play in the first Castle Lager Test against New Zealand at Supersport Park starting on Saturday.
Smith was unable to play in the third Test against Australia after injuring the ring finger of his left hand during net practice.
He took part in net practice on Thursday, and while he experienced some discomfort while batting, team physiotherapist Shane Jabaar said the signs were encouraging.
"We'll treat the finger some more, and then we'll take a final decision tomorrow (Friday)," said Jabaar.
If Smith is unable to play, Jacques Kallis - who will be making his 100th Test appearance for South Africa - will captain the South African team.
