Simpson's lawyers deny the allegations
A US clothing company is suing singer Jessica Simpson for $100m (£56m) for breach of contract for failing to promote their brand.

Tarrant Apparel Group (TAG) said in court papers she signed a deal in 2004 to use her name to sell sportswear.

The deal requires Simpson to be "actively involved in promoting products, whether requested or not".

TAG claims she not only failed to wear their clothes, but has also named a rival make of jeans as her favourites.

Fight

Simpson's lawyer, Jed Ferdinand, said his client denies the allegations.

"It's absolutely untrue," he said. "That's what the evidence will show, and she will vigorously fight the lawsuit."

California-based TAG said it had already paid Simpson $2.2m, with another $1.6m guaranteed in sales royalties and $4.4m for the remainder of the contract.

The deal also requires the actress to "publicly wear/display or use the products, particularly at events, shows and appearances", said the papers filed in Manhattan's state Supreme Court.

The clothing lines are Jessica Simpson, Princy, and JS by Jessica. A fourth brand, to come out in January 2007, is Sweet Kisses.

TAG lawyer Jack Gordon said both parties had attempted to resolve the dispute amicably but negotiations failed.

"The fact is that celebrity branded apparel requires the support of the celebrity," he said.

Simpson, 25, played Daisy Duke in this year's movie remake of 1980 TV series Dukes of Hazzard.
