Los Angeles - Matthew Perry, one of the stars of the hit US television show Friends, will play a mentally unstable screenwriter in an independently-made black comedy called Numb, an industry report said on Tuesday.

The 36-year-old actor, who played Chandler Bing in Friends for 10 years, will play a depressed man who puts himself through psychological counselling after falling in love with a woman.

The movie will be directed by Canadian-born writer Harris Goldberg, who co-wrote and co-produced the slapstick 1999 hit Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo, starring Rob Schneider, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Perry has appeared in feature films such as The Whole Nine Yards (2000) and its 2004 sequel The Whole Ten Yards, as well as in television's White House drama series West Wing.
