Pretoria - Police are hunting for three awaiting-trial prisoners who escaped from a police transport van between New Lock Prison and Pretoria North magistrate's court on Wednesday.
Police spokesperson Brenda Kgafela said: "Shortly after 08:00 this morning, a police truck transporting about 25 prisoners to Pretoria North, was held up by three armed men in a silver BMW in Pretoria West."
Kgafela said the men - two of whom had pistols and one a rifle - stopped the police truck at the corner of President Burger and Carl streets in Pretoria West.
A single shot was fired by one of the three. No one was injured.
Kgafela said: "The men asked the truck driver to get out of the vehicle and hand them his keys, which they used them to free three men from the 25 who were handcuffed in the back of the truck."
The prisoners transported in the truck were facing an array of charges, said Kgafela, and it would be some time before police could establish the identities of the escapees.
