Bucharest - About 16 000 Romanians have been evacuated from their homes since floods first hit the country in early April.

The Romanian interior ministry published a report on the effects of the floods on Thursday.

About 150 people had to be evacuated on Wednesday night, after a flood protection barrier cracked in Ostrov-Peceneaga, in the southeast of the country.

In Olt county in the south, a dyke between the towns of Dabuleni and Corabia broke on Thursday morning.

About 1 000 people were preparing to be evacuated, said Dorel Predescu, a Romanian civil protection official.

More than 1 400 police officers were helping to evacuate people and reinforce dykes in several counties bordering the Danube River.

The report said 152 municipalities had been hit by the floods, 326 homes had been destroyed and more than 500km of road had been damaged.

According to the country's agriculture ministry, 70 000ha of land had been "flooded in a controlled manner" to protect residential neighbourhoods.

The Danube's water levels in Romania were down by 36cm on Thursday, compared with Wednesday said the national hydrology institute.
