London - A man of Kashmiri origin died in a "horrific way" and three others were injured when a convenience store was firebombed in London, police said on Friday.

Police are hunting the attacker, said to be a black male in his early 30s, who hurled a lit missile at the shop the Kennington district of south London on Thursday.

"It is absolutely appalling. It is a horrific way for someone to die. The staff are still in shock," said Detective Chief Inspector David Garwood of the Specialist Crime Directorate.

The dead man was named as Khizar Hayat, of Bermondsey, southeast London.

"His family are in Kashmir, which sustained a serious earthquake, and they are not contactable easily," Garwood said.

Another man is in a critical condition in hospital.

Convenience stores in Britain are largely owned by families with south Asian roots who immigrated from east Africa during the 1970s.
