Bushbuckridge - A husband who hacked his heavily pregnant wife to death with an axe and a butcher knife then hanged himself in the same room.
Meanwhile, the couple's two young children, who are estimated to be younger than 10, woke up as usual and went out to play, not realising that both their parents were dead.
They returned for lunch during the afternoon and tried to wake up their mother.
"They then went to call neighbours and told them their mother was not waking up and that she was lying in a lot of blood," said superintendent Moatshe Ngoepe of Mopani police on Tuesday.
The children hadn't seen their father hanging from the rafters in a corner of the room.
Mhala police were called to the house and found distraught neighbours keening outside the house.
Couple had heated argument
"The woman was killed while she was heavily pregnant. She was expecting to give birth to a child soon," said Ngoepe.
Some neighbours had overheard the couple having a heated argument in the early hours of Monday morning, but didn't know what the fight was about.
The husband normally worked in Gauteng.
Police have opened a murder as well as an inquest docket.
