Cape Town - Two brothers have appeared in Kempton Park magistrate's court in connection with an armed heist at Johannesburg International Airport in March when R70m in American banknotes was stolen.

The case of Rooshdenne Rudolf, 42, a Cape Town attorney, was postponed until Friday for a formal bail hearing.

Superintendent Vishnu Naidoo of the police said Rudolf had been arrested on Saturday.

Rudolf's lawyer, Reuben Liddell, said on Tuesday he had handed Rudolf to superintendent Piet Viljoen, chief of the police's unit against serious and violent crimes, at Bellville South police station about 11:00 on Saturday. Rudolf was then driven to Johannesburg.

"He will plead absolutely not guilty until we have more clarity about the charges," said Liddell.

According to Liddell, the fact that his client had handed himself in "was an agreement between the police and the defence".

Has a heart condition

Rudolf's brother, Shadeen Rudolf, 43, was arrested at Club Mykonos resort near Langebaan on Monday last week and was also transferred to Johannesburg.

Naidoo said: "The Cape police had a warrant for his arrest."

Shadeen Rudolf was unable to appear in court because of a heart condition. Naidoo said Shadeen's case was heard in absentia on Wednesday last week.

Liddell said both cases were postponed to Friday, when the brothers would appear together in Kempton Park magistrate's court, if their health allowed it.

He said Rooshdenne had severe asthma.

The brothers allegedly were part of a syndicate that stole foreign currency to the value of R70m from a South African Airways flight on March 25.

Ten other men also have been arrested in connection with the heist.

One suspect has died

Police are still looking for another 13 suspects, who apparently are in Angola and Namibia.

The 10 who have been arrested are: Mzukisi Magwaza, 24, Vusimuzi Khumalo, 32, Sean Soobramoney, 32, Nazir Ismail, 38, Themba Phutitsi, 33, Anius Ngpfume, 38, Danisa Chuna, Bheki Khumalo, Rookaya Ebrahim, 35, and Magdalene Moonsamy, 24.

Bheki Khumalo apparently died as a result of injuries incurred during his arrest. Naidoo didn't want to comment on it.
