Doctors Complete 6-Way Kidney Transplant

BALTIMORE -- Surgeons in Maryland have conducted a half-dozen kidney transplants at the same time -- a series of operations believed to be the first of their kind.
Officials at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore said last weekend's surgeries were made possible after a so-called altruistic donor was found to be a match for one of five transplant candidates. That enabled a chain of donations involving a total of six donors and six recipients.
The 10-hour surgeries Saturday used six operating rooms and nine surgical teams.
In the past, Johns Hopkins has conducted a quintuple transplant and several triple transplants.
