Newcastle Join Race For Vargas

Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan is reportedly ready to launch a £6 million bid for Catania left back Juan Manuel Vargas in an attempt to steer the player away from the clutches of Fiorentina.The Peruvian international was a key component of the Catania team last season and has won many plaudits throughout his 65-game career in Serie A, but Newcastle’s quest to land the versatile Vargas may be in vain.

Several clubs in Italy and Spain are allegedly keeping tabs on the player, with the Sicilian club all but resigned to losing him in the summer.

Champions League-bound Fiorentina are strongly tipped to land the 24-year old, with their position in Europe’s elite competition thought to be the breaker in the deal.
