PC/OS 10 Is Based on Ubuntu 9.04 - OpenWorkstation and WebStation editions available

Yesterday evening, January 26th, Roberto Dohnert proudly announced the immediate availability for download of the PC/OS 10 Ubuntu-based operating system. Not only that the new PC/OS has drastically changed its version number, from 2009.x to 10, but it is also distributed in two editions: OpenWorkstation and WebStation! PC/OS 10 is now based on the popular Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) operating system and it's powered by Linux kernel 2.6.28. The speedy Google Chrome web browser and the versatile Skype VoIP client are also part of this brand-new release of the PC/OS operating system!

Highlights of PC/OS 10:

· Based on Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope);
· Linux kernel 2.6.28;
· Added the Skype VoIP client (available on both OpenWorkstation and WebStation editions);
· Added Google Chrome web browser (the default web browser for the WebStation edition);
· Updated the OpenOffice.org open source office suite;
· Added recovery and support utilities for the BFS (Be File System) filesystem;
· Atunes is now the default audio player on the OpenWorkstation edition;
· Applied all the existing security updates and patches;
· Fixed lots of reported bugs from previous releases!

That's not all, because PC/OS 10 also brings expansion kits, which allow you to extend PC/OS' functionality. The main kits are: Multimedia Kit, Developer Kit and Office Kit. They include useful and popular applications, such as Mono runtime, Mozilla Thunderbird, Gambas, QT Creator, Eclipse, AbiWord, Gnumeric or MonoDevelop. About PC/OS:

A derivative of Ubuntu, PC/OS has an XFCE desktop environment that has a layout similar to the now defunct Be operating system. However, this distribution isn't a reimplementation of BeOS, but aims to reach a similar level of simplicity. PC/OS has the Ubuntu restricted extras preinstalled, supporting many multimedia formats out of the box. The XFCE desktop's lower system footprint means that this distribution can work even on older hardware, but can also power newer workstations.
