UFC 193: Rousey vs. Holm LIVE Results From Melbourne, Australia (IN PROGRESS)

UFC 193 takes place tonight live from what is likely to be the new largest live audience for a UFC event in history, as Ronda Rousey vs. Holly Holm headlines a night of action at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne, Australia.

The Rousey-Holm main event, which has quickly become a grudge match between two undefeated fighters in their prime after yesterday’s wild scene at the official UFC 193 weigh-ins is expected to set the new all-time UFC attendance record, as 70,000 or more fans are expected to pack the building in Melbourne to watch a night of action headlined by two UFC women’s championship bouts for the first time in history.

The co-main event of the evening will see dominant UFC Women’s Strawweight Champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk will defend her title against gritty contender Valerie Letourneau, while a rematch of one of the best action heavyweight fights of all-time rounds out the top three matches, as sluggers Mark Hunt and Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva will duke it out again in a rematch of their legendary draw from 2013.

UFC 193 Pay-Per-View

Jared Rosholt vs. Stefan Struve

Round 1: Both guys are in the Octagon now. Referee Herb Dean is in position. Round one begins. Even at 6’2”, Jared Rosholt looks tiny in there with the seven-foot Stefan Struve. So far the wrestler, Rosholt, hasn’t attempted a takedown attempt. Struve is staying on the outside and stalking Rosholt at times, throwing long front kicks to keep him at bay and score points here in the early goings of round one. The fans start to boo as we are almost two minutes into the round and not much has happened. Rosholt goes for his first takedown attempt and he gets Struve down with ease. Following the takedown, Rosholt remained in top position on the ground for the remainder of the round. He definitely controlled the bigger man, but didn’t really inflict a lot of punishment either.


Round 2: Round two begins with Struve trying to be a little busier than he was in the opening frame. It’s worth noting that despite the fact we have a record-breaking crowd of 70,000 people inside Etihad Stadium, the Melbourne audience is much like a Japanese audience, remaining quiet outside of boo’ing when too much time goes by without any real action. Struve charges at Rosholt with a combination of punches, but Rosholt avoids getting hit and changes levels and takes Struve down with ease again. The two end up in a scramble almost immediately, and while they did pop back up to their feet, Rosholt took him right back down. Rosholt has side control from the top position, yet Herb Dean warns them because he’s not doing anything with the position. Rosholt stands up and throws a big kick to the legs of a grounded Struve before diving into Struve’s full guard.

Round 3: Third and final round of the fight. We’re two minutes into the round and we’re still standing, but literally next to nothing has happened thus far. This definitely turned out to be a horrible fight to schedule as the PPV opener. Meanwhile, Struve fakes a low kick and wings it up high, partially finding the mark. Two minutes left in the round. Rosholt is finally starting to look a bit fatigued. Struve scores with a decent kick and senses an opportunity so he charges at Rosholt with punches. Struve catches Rosholt backing away with a solid knee to the grill. Right after that, Rosholt takes Struve down again. “Control his f*cking wrists!” from a shouting Marc Laimon in Rosholt’s corner gets UFC commentator Joe Rogan cracking up. Back on the feet, Struve actually takes Rosholt down, but unfortunately it was just as the ten second ticker hit. Struve finishes the third and final round blasting Rosholt from top position.

Urijah Hall vs. Robert Whitaker

Round 1: The first round kicks off with Whitaker going right after the former TUF finalist. With Whitaker’s past as the TUF Smashes winner and him being the hometown favorite, the crowd is loud and lively for the first time since the pay-per-view began. Whitaker just blasted Hall with a big punch that rocked him and stunned him. Hall was in trouble but Whitaker hasn’t been able to finish him off. The action slows down a bit. Hall is using excellent foot work and leg kicks to keep Whitaker off of him. Uriah Hall just did some ninja-style kicks but ended up missing and falling on his butt. Whitaker takes advantage and jumps on top of Hall. It took a while, but Whitaker finally got full mount. He immediately loses it. Whitaker still on top position on the ground. He’s not destroying Hall or anything, but he is clearly in control of this fight, especially since it hit the floor. Whitaker takes Hall’s back and he’s looking for a choke. Hall reverses position and ends up on top of Whitaker just as the round ends.

Round 2: Whitaker throwing bombs as soon as the second round begins, but Hall is doing a good job of judging the distance and avoiding them. Hall goes for a big shot but misses and ends up clinched against the cage taking foot stomps from the former TUF Smashes winner. The two separate and each guy lands a good shot. Hall launches a big high kick that looked good but didn’t really connect. Right after that, Hall takes what appears to be a poke to the eye but a replay shows it was clearly a closed-fist shot from Whitaker, which Joe Rogan points out. When the action resumes, Rogan brings on Marc Ratner to talk about the poke and he too agrees that it was clearly a closed-fist. We get a lull in the action for about a minute and then Hall clearly decides to amp things up a bit, and he does exactly that with a beautiful high kick. Hall starts telegraphing a spinning move of some kind, as Joe Rogan points out, but he never actually does it. Hall is looking very athletic and talented but if you take out the flashiness, he isn’t really doing a whole lot of damage.

Round 3: The third and final round begins with total fireworks right out of the gate, as both guys are throwing bombs. Whitaker blasts and hurts Hall with a really good shot. Whitaker follows up with a couple more very strong punches and now he switches to knees as Hall has his face buried in the cage. Whitaker is slowing down now and it looks like Hall is going to survive. Hall is dealing with an eye issue of some kind. He’s wincing pretty noticeably and definitely has some swelling issues. Whitaker lands another good shot as the two separate. Hall lands a beautiful head kick and an equally impressive flying knee. Hall is the one turning it on now as Whitaker is stuck with his back on the cage and a determined Urijah Hall looking to steal this round. Hall lands a nice front kick and then another head kick. Whitaker eats both and keeps coming forward. One minute remaining in what has been an absolutely incredible round of action. Whitaker lands a nice right hand over the top but Hall calls him in. Whitaker gets a hold of Hall’s back and has him against the cage standing. He very wisely yanks him down to the mat to try and score some potentially important last-second points. The round will end on that note. What a great final round.

Mark Hunt vs. Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva

Round 1: The first round begins with Hunt landing a tree-trunk sized leg kick. Hunt is coming after Bigfoot looking to engage, but it is Bigfoot who is backing up and looking to play it safe/smart. Hunt rushes in with a big left hand and he gets Bigfoot’s attention. Another leg kick from Hunt. Bigfoot is determined to move and score points, but he’s not doing much of the scoring points part. He goes for a big punch and a kick follow-up, but landed neither. Out of nowhere, Hunt blasts Bigfoot backing up and drops him. He follows in with a few punches and that does it. Mike Goldberg calling it another walk-off knokout. It wasn’t really a “walk-off knockout” in the fashion of his most recent few, but it was a great finish for Mark Hunt.

UFC Women’s Strawweight Championship

Joanna Jedrzejczyk vs. Valerie Letourneau

Round 1: The pre-fight video package airs for tonight’s co-main event of the evening, as it’s time for the UFC Women’s Strawweight Championship fight between Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Valerie Letourneau. The challenger, Letourneau, makes her way to the Octagon first. The Tale of the Tape is shown and then Bruce Buffer does his thing. The round opens up with J.J. jabbing and moving in. Valerie catches Joanna coming in with a goof punch and takes her down off of it immediately. Valerie is controlling the champion on the ground. After about a minute, Joanna manages to get back to her feet. Valerie is definitely using the size advantage for her in this one. She has Joanna clinched against the cage back-first and Joanna hasn’t been able to escape. Finally, the two separate. Joanna rocks Valerie with a big shot. Valerie grabs a headlock and takes some time to recover, and is able to because Joanna can’t get herself free. The two separate and Joanna moves in but Valerie is willing to engage and she is doing a good job of holding her own in the striking department. Head kick by Valerie. The big front kick to the face that rocked Valerie might have been enough to win the round for the champion, as Valerie turned her back and was clearly in trouble after that shot. Great round.

Round 2: Joanna comes out utilizing her hand-speed in the early goings of the second round, landing a nice combination of punches and finishing up with a good leg kick. Valerie lands a nice kick to the body. Joanna picking her shots not but Valerie manages to get her up against the cage. Valerie, who has a bit of a mouse under her right eye from some elbows by the champ, lands a decent shot backing up as she lets go of the clinch. Valerie lands two nice right hands to the champion. Joanna chops away at Valerie with solid leg kicks. Valerie with a good kick to the body. Joanna throwing quick punches while showing a tight defense. J.J. starting to turn it up a bit as the second round comes to an end. She might have done enough to take the round right at the end.

Round 3: The third round begins with Joanna landing some leg kicks. Valerie rushes her and snatches her up in a clinch against the cage. Both ladies work some knees and then Joanna turns her and now she has Valerie’s back against the cage. The two separate. Joanna with some more good leg kicks and we now see that Valerie’s leg is knotting up from them. Joanna lands a few shots and then stuns Valerie with a head kick. J.J. is establishing control here in the third after two very close rounds to start the fight. Joanna continues to chop down the lead leg of the challenger, and is clearly winning this round thus far. Valerie gets in a couple of good shots in an exchange. Joanna with a nice kick to the body. As advertised. Valerie’s eye is swelling up pretty good. Her left leg is a mess as well. She still seems completely game, but she is getting beaten up right now. Joanna turns it on a bit to close out the third round.

Round 4: We enter the first of potentially two championship rounds with J.J. picking up where she left off in the third frame. Joanna is in the zone right now. Valerie is trying to bring it on a bit more here in the fourth but J.J. is simply one step ahead of her. The record-breaking crowd at Etihad Stadium just got insanely loud and they are sustaining it for what seems like forever. J.J. is scoring basically at will now. Valerie is still trying at every turn but J.J. is pretty much shutting her down at this point. Valerie will land a shot here or there, whether it be a leg kick or a punch at random, but J.J. is stacking up points all-the-while. Joanna lands a beautiful right hand as the fourth round nears a close. The horn sounds to end the fourth round.

Round 5: The fifth and final round starts off with Valerie coming out more determined. She lands a kick-punch combo and is protecting herself better when Joanna advances. Still, J.J. is in a grove and is winning the round thus far. She’s landing combinations of punches and finishing most of them with brutal leg kicks. Valerie’s face is a swollen mess and her left leg is just in shambles. Joanna is really putting an accumulated beating on Valerie throughout five rounds tonight. J.J. is opening up some more here in the fifth and final round and the crowd lets her hear it as they get super loud again. Joanna switches stances. The referee pauses the action and looks at Valerie’s eye. When the action resumes, J.J. immediately picks up where she left off, brutalizing Valerie’s leg and peppering her with punches. The horn sounds to end the final round.

Joanna Jedrzejczyk def. Valerie Letourneau via unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 50-45) to retain the UFC Women’s Strawweight title.
