AEW Champion Explains Why he Hated His Time in Ring of Honor

All Elite Wrestling and Ring of Honor may both be owned by Tony Khan, but don't expect to see Austin Gunn make an appearance for ROH.

In March 2022, Khan announced his purchase of Ring of Honor, which had temporarily ceased operations in December 2021.

Since then, ROH has held a handful of Pay-Per-View events and recently began its online weekly ROH programming.

From June to September of 2019, Austin Gunn was part of the ROH roster prior to arriving in AEW.

Speaking on the Under the Ring podcast this month, the AEW World Tag Team Champion explained why he didn't enjoy his time.

"I hated my time in ROH. Not because of my experiences, just because I wasn’t ready to be on my own, and I had to move to Baltimore to go to the developmental system."

Gunn added that he felt incredibly isolated at a time when he knew he should have been integrating among the ranks of the ROH roster.

"Once I got there, I was living in a hotel for six months, and my whole schedule flipped upside down. I wasn’t very independent by then, I wasn’t cooking my own meals. I was overeating, I wasn’t pushing myself to workout every day. I would lock myself in the hotel room."

Despite the issues Gunn faced in ROH, he is able to look back at his time and remember the important lessons he learned.

In the interview, Gunn explained how his time in ROH was a wake-up call for him as to how quickly things can unravel.

"It showed me how fast things can get out of hand if I don’t hold myself accountable; if I don’t work very hard and push myself. I didn’t understand what it took to be in this business yet. Yeah, and then by the time I got out of there and then moved back to Orlando, I got myself in gear and ready."

Gunn made it clear that he was not "bashing" ROH, but that he was depressed at the time and knew things were not working.

Austin and his brother Colten are currently in their first reigns as AEW World Tag Team Champions.

The brothers dethroned The Acclaimed on the February 8, 2023, edition of AEW Dynamite.
