The parents of a baby boy endured a "horrendous" 30-minute wait before a car thief who drove off with their son inside their vehicle returned to the scene and dumped him in the street.
The baby's 24-year-old mother was approached in Bolton by a man wearing a police jacket who told her he needed her car. She got out of the vehicle but the bogus official then grabbed her arm and pulled her out of the way.
The terrified mother managed to free her two-year-old boy from the back of the silver Lexus but was unable to reach her four-month-old baby before the thief drove off.
Police said the raider, who struck on Hypatia Street, was then involved in a hit-and-run crash nearby but he drove off again.
The child's parents were still standing in Hypatia Street about half-an-hour later when a Nissan Micra pulled up and a man took the car seat with the baby inside out and placed it on the pavement near to them. He then drove off.
Another crash took place soon after when the Nissan Micra hit a Citroen Xsara and a Volkswagen Passat in Winchester Way.
A 39-year-old man was arrested nearby on suspicion of theft and kidnapping and is at hospital being treated for injuries to his leg and neck.
Two other people suffered minor injures as a result of the crash.
Detective Constable Graham Clare said: "This was a horrendous ordeal for the family who were left absolutely distraught that their baby was taken from them.
"Fortunately he was returned safe and well but the time he was missing must have felt like an eternity for his parents."
