The AEW x NJPW: Forbidden Door pay-per-view event from the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, did some big numbers.
The event, which opened with AEW World Champion MJF vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi and headlined by Kazuchika Okada vs. Bryan Danielson, did the biggest live gate in AEW history.
Other top matches featured on the card included IWGP World Heavyweight Champion SANADA vs. Jungle Boy and Eddie Kingston, Tomohiro Ishii, The Young Bucks & Adam Page vs. Jon Moxley, Claudio Castagnoli, Wheeler Yuta, Shota Umino & Konosuke Takeshita.
AEW President Tony Khan announced that the show did about $1.2 million and was one of the top three biggest live gates in the history of pro wrestling in Canada.WrestleTix reports that over 13,500 tickets were distributed for the event. Khan wrote:
“Tonight #ForbiddenDoor in Toronto is officially the biggest live gate in @AEW history at about $1.2 million (USD), and it's one of the top 3 biggest live gates in the history of pro wrestling in Canada!”
This record will stand until AEW All In at Wembley Stadium on August 27 as it has already done over an $8 million gate, according to Khan, despite not having any matches announced for it yet.
Last year's show at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois, drew an attendance of 16,529 fans in the arena with a buy rate of 125,000 - 127,000. It was the first-ever co-promoted event between the two promotions.
