It seems only approrpiate that John Cena be featured prominently in this month's countdown. After all, its no secret that I support Cena every step of the way since the beginning of his lucrative run. Now, I've deflected several attacks and criticisms of the kid, so it should come to no surprise that I have come back this month with a real controversial top 10. The following are the 10 matches in Cena's big time career that make him WORTHY of main eventing, holding the belt, and to quote Mr. Schiavone, "putting butts in the seats." Without further ado, here, in chronological order, are the 10 Matches that make John Cena the top guy. Don't knock it until you've tried it.
10. John Cena vs. The Undertaker, WWE Vengeance 2003
Being at this event live in Denver, it was truly an electrifying atmosphere to see the young, wannabe thug Cena face the veteran Deadman in a psychological outing. Cena proved here he could play the heel perfectly, even if he ended up the Taker's punching bag. And seeing how this was during the dying days of the American Badass, the match was refreshing for Taker.
9. John Cena vs. The Big Show, WrestleMania XX
The match was billed as the opener for the still new US Title at WWE's biggest event...possibly ever. Cena came out to the usual cheers at the time and put on an impressive showing with the former Giant, including lifting him overhead in an awesome display for the F-U. Only Brock Lesnar and Kane have had as good of runs with the Show.
8. John Cena vs. JBL, WWE Judgment Day 2005
It was a total mismatch of styles and attitudes. This match could've been very ugly in ring had not it been for the special stipulations of an I Quit Match. With all the bloodshed and sacrifice, Cena was on his way to prove that he could wrestle in any kind of contest, and he put an end to the JBL days as a "Serious" contender in this event.
7. John Cena vs. Kurt Angle, Survivor Series 2005
It was the culmination of the most heat Cena would receive in the WWE. A recent transfer from SmackDown, the new Raw World Champion found himself ending a lackluster summer run with Chris Jericho, who is always loved by the fans. Now, he was in it even worse with Kurt Angle. Despite the crowd cheers and a stacked deck, Cena won his third consecutive Survivor Series match over the Wrestling Machine.
6. John Cena vs. Rob Van Dam, ECW One Night Stand 2006
It was the opportunity fans had been waiting for. RVD, the man most believed needed to win the World Title faced off with the "undeserving" Champ. Cena, who was still being represented on the microphone as a face, played the best game of ring psychology in his entire career. This match is what makes a wrestler that good, and for John Cena, it defined him as a two-way street: Face or Heel, he can get it done.
5. John Cena vs. Sabu, WWE Vengeance 2006
On a PPV Card loaded with several of the biggest stars of the day, Cena vs. Sabu was a crash style of hardcore wrestling that featured more chaos than in-ring action. The unpredictable and always sloppy Sabu flew around the ring with Cena in an excellent match that kept Cena in the title picture while also establishing him as a "hardcore" competitior.
4. John Cena vs. Edge, WWE Unforgiven 2006
Tables, Ladders, and Chairs. Edge's specialty, and after a very disappointing SummerSlam DQ, this match made sure that not just Cena, But EDGE as well would be Main Eventers for years to come. For another analogy on how two men become true headliners in a match, see SummerSlam 1998, when for the IC title, it was Triple H vs. The Rock.
3. John Cena vs. Umaga, Royal Rumble 2007
You wanted originality and innovation from two men who were considered "complete wastes" at the top of the card? You got it. This 23-minute masterpiece saw more twists and turns than either of these two could have expected. This is still Umaga's best match to date, and could be categorized as one of Cena's best performances.
2. John Cena vs. Shawn Michaels, WWE RAW from Italy, 2007
In the rematch that should've been their WrestleMania contest, John Cena and HBK went for 40+ minutes in a showdown that saw near falls, close finishes and a finale that sent the crowd home happy. Did I mention that Cena lost the contest? Funny how some of your best matches don't see you on top, because in this countdown, this marks the 3rd contest Cena lost to his opponent.
1. John Cena vs. The Great Khali, WWE Judgment Day 2007
It just happened and the wrestling world is buzzing with the biggest surprise of the night. Even I was against this match, feeling that it could go down as one of the worst of all time. I never thought anyone could carry off Khali like Kane attempted at WrestleMania, but boy was I wrong. One hell of an atmosphere and a great pop for the Champ, followed with an unexpected and excellent payoff. The Champ is here to stay.
These are the highlights of cena's wrestling carrer....
