Alex Ferguson has commended Republic of Ireland midfielder Darron Gibson for his performances so far this season.

Gibson will be handed a starting role in the Carling Cup final against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday after impressing throughout the competition and in FA Cup matches.

The 21-year-old has shone in recent outings and, having made the breakthrough to the Irish set-up, will be keen to become more involved in United's first team.

Ferguson sympathises with the Derry-born player, the Red Devils' large pool of midfield talent means chances are few and far between.

'It is a particularly hard situation for Darron given the number of midfielders I have got,' said Ferguson.

'Really, it is the strongest part of my squad, so lads like Darron have to be patient. If they are, their opportunities will come.

'Giving Darron a game on Sunday is at least recognition he has done very well this season.'
