In this column I am going to give you in my opinion why I think this years WrestleMania is the best one in a while. It might not be the most interesting, but this years will be a transition period if you will. We have matches where we have veterans wrestling Rookies like Edge vs Alberto Del Rio, Rey Mysterio vs Cody Rhodes, and last but not least Morrison, Trish Stratus(woo!) vs Dolph Ziggler and Lay-Cool. Well Snooki is in the match but I'm not counting her as she isn't even a true professional wrestler if I remember correctly. She is just from that Jersey Shore show. Then on the other hand we have two great veterans The Undertake and Triple H facing off; and a well structured, spell-binding feud between Jerry Lawler and Michael Cole. We also have Randy Orton vs CM Punk which is another decent feud running and dating back to 2008. The biggest draws in my opinion is the Cole and Lawler, Taker and Hunter with the help of the appearance and feud between Cena and The Rock which is also capturing the imagination of kids and adults alike!
This Wrestlemania is one of the best business decisions WWE could have made even though it will probably cost them a pretty penny and most likely not going to draw a whole lot of buys. It's not filled with huge names, but it does have a few very good names such as Austin and The Rock which will help significantly. The Edge vs Del Rio – though I really haven't followed much – doesn't have a whole lot of heat but that doesn't mean this match isn't going to be good for business. Anytime you have a younger guy vs a newer guy with the possibility the younger guy getting over is a great idea. This will help them out. In my opinion though Del Rio is still a bit green. He needs a better gimmick, and he really doesn't have the “it” factor yet. His finisher isn't really that great but these are all things that can be worked out over time. Just look at Triple H. He was a rich snob when he came in, now look at him. It just takes time and patience and a little luck to get some people to get over. John Morrison is an extremely great athlete that in my opinion is the future of the company along with CM Punk and Brian Danielson (that's rich I'm making a prophecy!) To help these couple of matches and wrestlers get over they have an extremely intense feud running.
Jerry Lawler vs Michael Cole has went to levels that I didn't expect two announcers could go. Jerry Lawler is a great wrestler especially in his prime and I am almost sure he could still keep up with the young guys today and teach them a thing or two. Something about Cole has really caught my eye with how he comes across on the headset to us – the listeners. I really didn't expect this feud to come this far and I believe it's just going to keep going! This feud really took off a couple of weeks ago when Cole brought the recently passed Jerry Lawlers mom into a promo. She had died the Sunday or Monday prior to the feud. Cole was cutting a promo on Lawler and asked how he felt that his mom had the perfect view of him loosing his recent match at the Pay-Per-View the week prior roughly. From that point on this feud had went up hill. Then this week on Raw we get treated to 2 Sexy (Jerry Lawlers Son) returning and cutting a promo on how he never had a dad. He got somewhat personal and they got into a heated argument about how they are ashamed of each others last names and what not. It was rather heart felt and I definitely felt sorrow for Lawler. Then Jr came out and had cut a promo as well on Michael Cole. I was on potty break so I didn't see much of this but it was nice hearing that Lawler has someone else backing him. This is a great storyline.
Another Match helping the draw power of Wrestlemania is the Taker vs Triple H. There is just so much to say about these two phenomenal athletes. That Raw where we found out Hunter was going to be challenging the Streak of the Dead-Man, these two guys didn't say one word! They had the crowd going nuts just by looking at each other and facial expressions. For the record if anyone ever had to break the streak I think it would be Triple H. He had all the political pool, he has a huge fan base, and these two guys are going to put on one heck of a show. I doubt Taker will loose this bout, but it makes you – well me – wonder because of all the things he has going for him. I mean he is married and has children with the owners daughter for God sake.
One of the bigger draws of the show is the return of the People's Champion THE ROCK! He and Cena has been feuding verbally over the last few weeks and we have seen some extremely interesting promos. I'd like to see them drag this out and The Rock stay longer – till Summerslam or even forever lol – but anyway keep these guys apart and let them tare into each other at Summerslam. This would be a great Summer feud if done correctly. It's Attitude vs PG!
So as you can see this is going to be a great Wrestlemania. It has some great draws on the card and some decent undercard matches with Mid-Card vs Maineventers. If done correctly this could help set up for the next generation of the WWE!
