Pat Summerall, legendary announcer, dead at 82.

The Dallas Morning News reports that Pat Summerall, who called NFL games for more than 40 years, has passed away.

Summerall had a 10-year career as a placekicker for the Lions, Cardinals, and Giants, and almost immediately upon hanging up the cleats in 1962, joined CBS, where he worked with the likes of Chris Schenkel, Jack Buck, and Tom Brookshier. But it was in 1981, when he was paired with former Raiders coach John Madden, that Summerall became the restrained, authoritative voice of football that would be his lasting image.

Summerall and Madden would work together, first at CBS and later with Fox, until 2002. He called 16 Super Bowls, more than any announcer in history. Here's Summerall hyping America for the changing of the guard in the NFL landscape, the 1992-93 NFC Championship between the Cowboys and 49ers.

Summerall retired to his Dallas-area home following the 2002 season, though he would pop up occasionally on Fox and ESPN broadcasts. The last game he called was the 2010 Cotton Bowl.
