Ann Mariam Campbell Gunkel (1936 - 1987)

Ann Gunkel was a pioneer who refused to accept the limits placed on women in professional wrestling. In an era when women were told they didn’t belong in the spotlight, she fought to put them there. As both a wrestler and a promoter, Gunkel was instrumental in bringing women’s wrestling to major arenas and television in the 1940s and 1950s, particularly in the American South. She challenged the male-dominated power structure of the industry, even taking on the National Wrestling Alliance itself, demanding fair recognition, opportunity, and respect for women performers. Ann Gunkel didn’t just help women wrestle — she helped women matter in professional wrestling. Her courage laid the foundation for every generation that followed.
