Things didn’t go according to plan for Adam Cole and Tom Lawlor at the AEW x NJPW: Forbidden Door pay-per-view event on Sunday night.
The bout was nixed in the afternoon at the last minute, a change made by AEW President Tony Khan, who announced that Cole was pulled because of an illness and his match vs. Tom Lawlor has been canceled.
"Due to illness, @AdamColePro isn't cleared tonight, therefore the Adam Cole vs @FilthyTomLawlor match is canceled. Despite the change, tonight will be an amazing show! Thank you to everyone watching #ForbiddenDoor, either here live in Toronto @ScotiabankArena or on PPV tonight!" Khan wrote.
It's unclear what the exact illness that Cole is dealing with or if the two promotions have plans to rebook the bout for a later date considering Lawlor does reside stateside.
Instead, Lawlor wasn’t kept on the card, but did wrestle. He just didn’t do it while it was broadcasted. Instead, he wrestled Serpentico in front of the live crowd before the show went on the air, with Lawlor winning.
Lawlor reacted to the change of plans in a tweet after the match:
“F**KING GUTTED. Thanks to Serpentico for wrestling me in front of the live crowd. You won’t see me on Forbidden Door but it’s going to be a great wrestling show so order and watch it.”
