New York Red Bulls midfielder Claudio Reyna is expected to formally announce his retirement on Wednesday.
One of the top players in United States history, the 34-year-old counts Rangers, Manchester City and Sunderland among his former clubs in a 14-year career which also took him to the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen and back to Major League Soccer with New York.
Reyna, who has managed just 27 matches in the last two MLS seasons due to a series of injury problems, has called a news conference, where he is likely to call time on his professional career.
Reyna has been plagued by nagging leg injuries throughout his spell with New York after he was signed to a two-year, US dollars 2.5 million contract by then-Red Bulls coach Bruce Arena.
Considered one of the greatest players ever to play for the US national team, Reyna served as captain during the 2002 and 2006 World Cups.
In 2002, the Livingston, New Jersey native helped lead the US to a surprise quarter-final berth.
Due to his efforts, Reyna became the first American player in history to be named on the FIFA World Cup All-Star First Team.
Reyna also was a member of the 1994 and 1998 US World Cup teams and is fourth all-time in caps with 112, scoring eight goals.
He retired from international football following the USA's exit from the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
