Default Gazza 'beyond help' says son, 12

Paul Gascoigne's 12-year-old son fears the troubled former England footballer is "probably going to die soon".

Regan, who has watched his father battle alcoholism and mental health problems, thinks there is no longer anything the family can do to help.

In a television interview for a documentary to be shown in the new year, he says: "He's probably going to die soon. I don't think there's any point helping him. We're wasting our time.

"If I could wish, I would wish that he would go away from us.

"Everyone thinks he's Gazza but because he's the top player doesn't mean he's a good dad or a good person to be with, does it, really?"

Surviving Gazza, to be shown on Channel 4 on Monday January 5, sees Regan, Gascoigne`s former wife Sheryl, 43, and two of her children from a previous marriage, Bianca, 22, and Mason, 19, track the fallen hero down to a hotel in Portugal.

Gascoigne tells the programme: "I've got food disorder, got bipolar, mood swings, anxiety. I drank when I was sad. And yes, I must admit I thought of dying."

The 41-year-old has been treated numerous times for drink and mental health problems.

He had an illustrious football career and is still perhaps best known for his exploits in the 1990 World Cup finals in Italy. He appeared 57 times in an England shirt and scored 10 goals for his country.

But the talented midfielder has a troubled history of emotional instability and erratic behaviour. Once regarded as one of the world's best footballers, Gascoigne's playing career was plagued by personal problems, many linked to his heavy drinking.

    Default Erratic weather 'harms wildlife'

Heavy rain caused food shortages for blue tits
UK wildlife is struggling to cope as erratic and unseasonal weather has taken its toll for a second consecutive year, the National Trust says.

It says birds, mammals and particularly insects have all suffered from a cold, late spring, a wet summer with little sunshine and a long, dry autumn.

The trust says species under threat include puffins, marsh fritillary butterflies and lesser horseshoe bats.

They warned another wet summer in 2009 could be a disaster for insects.

Studies of the past year by the trust's conservation experts show the impact of the weather and how some wildlife has become out-of-step with the usual seasonal patterns:

    • Snowdrops and red admiral butterflies were first spotted in January, earlier than normal.

    • Bees were hit hard in April by frost and snow

    • Rain in late May caused many birds' nests to fail, including those of the blue and great tits, because of the lack of insect food

    • It was a poor summer for migrant insects - butterflies, moths, hoverflies, ladybirds and dragonflies - because of the wet and cold June

    • In July, puffin numbers on the Farne Islands were down 35% on what they had been five years earlier

    • The common autumn cranefly, usually in pest proportions in September, was all but absent

Matthew Oates, a conservation adviser for the National Trust, said: "Many iconic species closely associated with the four seasons are having to cope with higher incidents of poor weather as our climate becomes more unpredictable.

"After two very poor years in a row we desperately need a good summer in 2009 otherwise it's going to look increasingly grim for a wealth of wildlife in the UK.

"Climate change is not some future prediction of what might happen, it's happening now and having a serious impact on our countryside every year."

This year's weather has brought some advantages however.

The cold and wet October made it a bumper year for fungi, with 26 species of waxcap spotted.

Unseasonal weather also led to a spectacular display of red, yellow and orange autumn leaves.

Poor weather in August had its benefits for certain cabbage white butterflies which prospered as their predators were depleted, the trust said.

Default Nurse in boot for 'up to 10 days'

Magdeline Makola has been working as a nurse in Edinburgh
A nurse who was found in the boot of her car suffering from hypothermia and dehydration could have been there for up to 10 days, police have said.

Magdeline Makola, a nurse at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, was found in Airdrie, Lanarkshire, on Boxing Day.

Lothian and Borders Police now want to speak to a black man, aged between 20 and 40, and who knew the 38-year-old.

Ms Makola, who went missing on 15 December, was found in her nightwear. She is now recovering in hospital.
During a news conference on Saturday afternoon, Ch Insp Tommy Tague, of Lothian and Borders Police, said: "Magdeline is a very committed nurse who has a close circle of friends. This would appear to be completely out of the blue."

He said Ms Makola, a South African-born British citizen who lives in Livingston, had known the man they want to speak.

Mr Tague said that the unnamed stocky-built man with dreadlocks had not been Ms Makola's boyfriend, but they had met five to six years ago in Scotland.

"There is nothing to suggest that this is a random attack," he said.

Police confirmed that detectives had interviewed the victim at Monklands Hospital in Airdrie only briefly due to the trauma of her ordeal.

She was found just after midday on Boxing Day by a police officer who was conducting a search of streets in Airdrie after Ms Makola's bank card was used in the Chapelhall area.
The chief inspector said: "One of the road policing officers discovered the car and heard some noises from within."

She had been restrained but it had not been confirmed if she had been threatened with a weapon or drugged.

Friends of the nurse, who works in heart medicine, first raised the alarm after she failed to turn up for work.

Fellow nurse and South African, Babs Gqabu, had worked with Ms Makola at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. She said she had been worried when her friend went missing.

On hearing that Ms Makola had been found safe, Ms Gqabu said she was grateful to the police, media and hospital staff for their support.
