Why John Cena vs. Ryback Doesn't Need WWE Championship in Play

The build for John Cena vs. Ryback is still mostly in it's infancy. We're just six days removed from Ryback delivering his best promo to date and him leaving Cena in the ring to get demolished. The feud should be a good one, but why bother having the WWE Championship involved?

Feuds should be built around a championship, a personal issue or a combination of each. The WWE Championship is supposed to be the pinnacle of the business and the crowning achievement for any wrestler that wins it.

The feud between Cena and Ryback falls under the "personal issue" and Ryback's promo did a lot to develop that story.

It's absolutely perfect that a wrestler would consider another a friend and would feel betrayed when that friend doesn't come out to help them. Ryback made that point very clear about Cena not coming out to help him as The Shield beat him down.

Having that personal vendetta against Cena is enough to fuel a hot feud. It makes logical sense. It's something that we can all identify with.

Now, Ryback did mention that Cena was enveloped in his quest for the title and that's why he wasn't helping him. Ryback did imply that he wanted to take the championship from Cena, but not because he wanted to be champion. He wants to take the belt to hurt Cena.

Whomever holds the WWE Championship should be embroiled in a feud about said title. If that title is the absolute top of the company, every single wrestler on the roster should be gunning for it. A title program is just that—a program about the title.

This feud really has nothing to do with the title. Is it possible that the WWE is going to put the title on Ryback? Yeah, they're certainly positioning him in that way, but why not make the title seem more important? Why not add in the layer of how important the title is and what benefits it brings?

With CM Punk's long title reign, I thought that the WWE was trending back toward having champions that lasted. It seemed like they were going back to valuing the championship and making each and every feud about Punk holding onto it or someone else's chase of it.

With this Ryback vs. Cena feud, it feels more like a prop. They could have put the title on someone else in the interim and had this feud and it would have felt the same.

Don't get me wrong, Ryback did a great job in his promo as far as establishing his reasons for attacking Cena. I just don't understand why we can't have an excellent feud while two other wrestlers fight for the WWE Championship and all that it bestows on it's owner.
