WWE has announced a tournament to crown a luchador as the No.1 contender to face Roman Reigns for the World Heavyweight Championship.
Roman Reigns’ interaction with AAA General Manager Rey Mysterio following the main event of this week’s RAW had fans talking about the OTC’s potential AAA appearance. Now, WWE posted a video featuring Mysterio on X/Twitter, revealing the reason.
Rey Mysterio announced that the September 14, 2026, episode of RAW will emanate from Arena CDMX in Mexico City for the first time in 15 years. He revealed that a tournament featuring luchadors from AAA, RAW, and SmackDown will begin on the August 10, 2026 episode of the red brand. The winner will face Roman Reigns for the World Heavyweight Championship in the main event of the Mexico City show.
“On September 14th, Monday Night RAW makes history when we broadcast live from Arena Ciudad de Mexico in Mexico for the first time in 15 years. Now, I’m not just a RAW superstar. I’m also the general manager of AAA. That’s why earlier this week, I spoke with RAW general manager Adam Pearce and the OTC, Roman Reigns.
“Roman recognized how important Lucha Libre is to me and how important this night is. And that’s why he has agreed to defend the World Heavyweight Championship that night on RAW. That’s right.
“Now, I promised to deliver Roman a worthy opponent. And we’ve agreed that a challenger needs to earn this opportunity. And there’s only one way to do this right. As you know, Mexico is the home and heart of Lucha Libre. So starting this Monday on RAW, we’ll be holding a tournament featuring the very best luchadors from RAW, SmackDown, and of course, AAA.
“The winner now has a chance to represent all of Lucha Libre and all of Mexico when he faces Roman Reigns in the main event of Monday Night Raw for the World Heavyweight Championship. La oportunidad aquí está (The opportunity is here). Let’s go,” Mysterio said.
