ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - Michigan promoted Ron English to defensive coordinator on Tuesday and hired Ron Lee and Steve Szabo as assistant coaches.

English, who spent the past three seasons as the Wolverines' secondary coach, replaces Jim Hermann as defensive coordinator. Hermann left the school to coach linebackers for the New York Jets.

English said last week he had accepted a job to coach defensive backs for the Chicago Bears. But on Thursday he told the team he decided to turn down the offer.

Michigan said Friday that English had returned to the school's football program, but didn't say in what capacity.

Szabo, fired last month after two seasons as defensive backs coach of the Buffalo Bills, will coach linebackers, Wolverines head coach Lloyd Carr said.

Lee, who spent the past three seasons as defensive backs coach at Wisconsin, will coach cornerbacks.
