Congress Wants Hearings For Steroids In Wrestling

The Chris Benoit situation was a senseless tragedy and has has affected countless people both in and out of the wrestling industry. The story has gained tremendous mainstream attention and its affect on the overall landscape of professional wrestling is not yet fully understood.

However - it is clear within World Wrestling Entertainment that a "worst case scenario" would be major involvement by the United States government into their subculture. It now appears the worst may become a reality.

Congressman Cliff Stearns, a republican from Florida, said 89 wrestlers had died before the age of 50 between 1985 and 2006, and he called on Congress to investigate.

"This abnormally high number of deaths of young, fit athletes should raise congressional alarms," Stearns said. "Congress needs to investigate the recent events and find out how big of a problem steroid use is in professional wrestling. Steroid use is a major public health problem that deserves Congress' full attention."

Former pro wrestler , better known as Konnan, agrees with Cliff Stearns. "I welcome the congressman's comments and I am definitely available to testify about the exploitation in wrestling. The wrestling life needs to be investigated. It's a draconian work schedule. We're on the road year-round. No other profession is that physical. At least touring rock bands get a few months to recuperate. Baseball players and football players get time off. But in wrestling, you can't take time off to recuperate because you might wind up losing your job. If Congress thought baseball was bad, just wait until they look into wrestling. I hope they do it soon. People are dying."

Sure Steriods were a contributant but most of the deaths were caused by years and years of Drug and Alcohol Abuse. The Pin Point is they want to put the sole blame on the WWE which isn't right when all the evidence hasn't been brought back yet and Congress wan't to make Wrestling as a Primary example then why don't you include every sports like Soccer, Football, Hockey, Basketball, and even Baseball again because putting the blame soley on Wrestling isn't right when you have other sporting professions doing the same exact thing. It would just make Congress look like an idiot and full of incompetence when they should know that the WWE/TNA/ and ROH is a Violent form of entertainment that is used to bring the fans in. Stupid Congress.

Whatever man, it's a good thing that they are looking into this, cuz things is f'd up. I hope they give wrestlers some time off from now on...or work lighter schedules or something.. Anyhows there's no need for an angry Konnan to comment on this IMO.

Most of those deaths were heart attacks, O.D's, or Suicide. Maybe Congress could do something constructive like invisigate Halliburton or figure out were all of our money is going.

This is unreal. Come on Congress wants to get involved in a form of entainment and tell grown men how and when they can make a living. I can't believe that they are actually people saying they need to investigate the wrestling industry. I thought that we abolished slavery along time ago in this country. Every person that wrestles for a living is making a choice, no one is forcing them to choose this career.

As far as the steroid issue, sure it goes on in wrestling just like in every other sport. All of the people that utilize steroids are doing so of their own free will. For Congress to get involved in any form of sport because of steroids is just not needed. I want a gov't that keeps my country moving forward not stopping everything to investigate if grown men of their own free will or using and or abusing steroids. At what point does the gov't stop, do they next want to investigate what all of us the normal people do for a living because of the high rate of death that occures because of heart disease from stress. Come on this is supposed to be a democracy not a socialist gov't.

I had a feeling this would happen sooner or later. It's just like did with the professional sports and if the WWE are called to a meeting they should just do what everybody else did don't give them shit for info IMO. Congress just likes to poor gas on smoldering fire's.

^ True, its their choice. But If their presurized into doing them, If they want to be a competitor in the business in a shoter time, and take that short road, in order for-fill their dreams. Some choices should not be an option.
