The future of Drogheda United is looking bleak this morning.

Drogheda United officials held a three-hour meeting with their first team squad last night to discuss outstanding payments.

The 2007 champions also owe money to the Revenue Commissioners and are due to appear in court next week in a bid to come out of examinership.

The club have been trying to raise the much needed funds to secure their future.

However, time is running out and there are growing concerns that the club are in real danger of going out of business just two years after winning their first League of Ireland title.

A statement from the club is expected by lunchtime today.

Athlone fans agree patron scheme

There was good news for Athlone Town after 200 fans of the club committed their own money to a patron scheme.

The scheme aims to clear debts believed to be in the region of €300,000.

However, the future of first division club Finn Harps is still uncertain.

The Donegal outfit may have to revert to a largely amateur set up and as of now have only four players signed up for next season.

Club officials have confirmed that they need to come up with €150,000 within the next three weeks to satisfy the FAI that they are in control of their debt, which currently stands at €290,000.
