Default Salix OS 13.1.2 KDE Has Been Released

The Salix OS team has announced the first release of a KDE-based version of the Linux distribution. Salix OS 13.1.2 KDE is based on the slightly older KDE 4.4.3 and comes with a variety of KDE software.

"The Salix team is proud to announce the very first official release of Salix KDE edition," George Vlahavas wrote in the official announcement.

"Salix KDE includes the elegant KDE 4.4.3 accompanied by a very rich collection of KDE centric software, all in the size of a CD-ROM sized image," he explained.

"The Konqueror web browser, KMail and Ktorrent are the main networking applications included in this release, followed by Akregator, an RSS reader for KDE, Kopete, the KDE instant messenger and more," he listed some of the software packages bundled with Salix OS 13.1.2 KDE.

Salix OS follows the 'one application per task' motto and only comes with a streamlined set of packages by default. The Salix OS team veers away from the standard KDE SC packages at times.

Salix OS KDE comes with Kaffeine as a media player and Clementine as a music player and management tool. Clemetine is based on the classic Amarok 1.4, but built with the KDE 4 libraries.

The CD and DVD burning software K3b is also included in Salix OS 13.1.2 KDE. The Linux distro comes with a full office suite with the inclusion of KOffice.

"A collection of three KDE iso images are immediately available to our users, including 32-bit and 64-bit installation images as well as a live image that can be burned to a CD or used with a USB drive," the developer explained.

Salix OS is based on Slackware and retains the core ideals and principles of the popular Linux distro. As with the other Salix OS releases, Salix OS KDE aims to provide a simple, light and easy to use environment.
